Savoie neighbours Switzerland (East), the Jura (North) and the little-known Bugey region (West). The region is under 5,000 acres, representing approximately 0.5% of French wines. In 2014 the Institut National de l'Origine gave the region of Savoie permission to make traditional method sparkling wines under the banner of Cremant de Savoie. Fruit from denomination of Ayze are eligible after the wine has spent at least twelve months maturing. 60% of grapes used must be jacquere and altesse, with at least 40% jacquere.
