Franciacorta

South of Lake Iseo in the province of Brescia is the location of the growing area that produces Franciacorta sparkling wine. The wine is based on Chardonnay, pinot-noir and pinot-blanc grapes; uses similar production methods as champagne, as are the label's dryness classifications. Non vintage Franciacorta may not be released until at least 25 months after harvest of which 18 months must be in contact with the yeast in the bottle, although many age for longer. Riserva or millesimato cannot be sold for 67 months after harvest of which 30 is in contact with the yeast. Versions of this wine, which was awarded DOCG status in 1995, are:

  • Franciacorta Brut (e.g. Berlucchi 61 Brut from www.drinksandco.co.uk)

  • Franciacorta Riserva (e.g. Antinori Marchese Riserva Contessa from www.drinksandco.co.uk)

  • Franciacorta Saten (only white grapes, often 100% chardonnay & bottled under less pressure to give a silky effect; e.g. Berlucchi 61 brut from www.drinksandco.co.uk)

  • Franciacorta (Pas Dosé are wines that receive no added sugar, made easier for this wine, by the warm climate; e.g. Il Mosnel from www.drinksandco.co.uk)
