Bugey

The Bugey region lies in the L'ain department, east of Lyon and west of Geneva; nestling

in the foothills of the Jura mountains. They gained AOC accreditation in 2009. Producers are

mainly small in scale, with the bulk of their produce being consumed locally.

Bugey-Cordon is a rose and made using the Methode Ancestrale. It is either 100% Gamay or a

blend of Gamay and Poulsard. Usually almost ruby-red, low in alchohol (8%), demi-sec in stlyle

and best drunk young. Bugey white sparkling wines usually employ Method Traditionelle,

with a minimum 9 months on the lees and come in both slightly sparkling (petillant) and full

sparkling (mousseux) form. The Cru name Montagnieu has a minimum 12 months on the lees.

The most important sparkling wines in the Bugey region are:

  • Bugey Cerdon Rose (e.g. Bernard Rondeau Bugey Cerdon Rose Methode Ancestrale 2017 from www.vinatis.co.uk)

  • Bugey Montagnieu (Altesse, Chardonnay & Mondeuse grapes, Method Traditionelle)
