Alsace

Produced since 1900, Crémant d'Alsace was classified as an AOC in 1976 and the designation Crémant regulated by the European Parliament in 1996. Crémant d'Alsace is usually made from a combination of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Auxerrois, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay grapes. Crémant d'Alsace rose, while rare, is made from Pinot Noir grapes and refrred to coloquially as the "whitest of the reds". Similarly the white Crémant can be made solely from Pinot Blanc and is referred to as the "whitest of the whites".
